How To Solve Sudoku Puzzles Quickly and Easily

History Of Sudoku Part 1

For the next few days, I have decided to give some of my readers a brief history of Sudoku and how this puzzle has grown in popularity. Although this lesson may not help you with your puzzle solving skill, it is still good to know the origins of a game we all deeply love.

The origins of Sudoku can be traced back to 1979, when it’s first puzzle was created by a retired architect named Howard Garns. During this time, the puzzle was only termed as a “number placement” game, and it was inspired by the latin square invention of Leonhard Euler, but with the unit restrictions and partially filled squares. The puzzle was first published by Dell Magazines in their Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games.

It was not until 1984, that the puzzle game acquired its popularity in Japan. In April of 1984 the puzzle game was introduced by Nikoli in their monthly periodical Nikolist. It was during this time that the puzzle was called “Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru” which means “the number must be single” or in simpler terms, ” the number must occur only once”. This name was given by President Kaji Maki, who was the president of Nikoli, and it wasn’t until a later date that he abbreviated the name to “SudoKu”. In 1986, Nikoli presented two more innovations to the puzzle that greatly contributed to its global popularity. The first addition was the limitation of no more than 32 givens for a Sudoku and the second innovation was the creation of “symmetrical” puzzles, which meant that all the givens were distributed in rotationally symmetrical cells. Since then, Sudoku has grown in popularity across Japan and it is now being published in other periodicals, like Asahi Shimbun. Unto this very day, Nikoli still holds the trademark for the term “sudoku” in Japan and other publications are forced to use alternate terms for this number puzzle.

I Have A Doctorate In Sudoku Puzzle Solving!

Now I know you are looking at this blog title and probably wondering what in the heck am I talking about.? Sometimes I don’t even know what I actually mean. Of course, I know this sounds strange, especially coming from someone who claims to be an expert in sudoku. But that’s exactly it. I am just an expert, not a doctor in the science of sudoku puzzle solving.

With that being said, I should just get straight to the point. Stephen Snyder, a post-doctorate student from Stanford University, has won , not his 1st, but his 2nd World Sudoku Championship. Someone, who actually has a real doctorate degree in Genetics, has grabbed the World Sudoku Title once again. This 2 day event was held in Goa, India on April 16th and has brought together 30 different countries to compete for the World Sudoku Championship Title. Initially, Snyder had come into the competition ranked second behind sudoku expert Jakub Ondrousek, from the Czech Republic. After seven rounds of individual play, Snyder obtained the highest points to still hold onto his position as the ” King Of Sudoku Puzzle Solving”

The Death Of Sudoku Puzzles

Maybe it’s just my own observation; or could it be that we are actually seeing the slow decline of yet another popular puzzle game.

Have any of you noticed that sudoku and its addictive number puzzles are not talked about much?

Of course we know that over time it has lost its “craze element”. However, are we slowly approaching the death of sudoku and sudoku puzzles?

Sudoku VS. Kakuro

While sudoku is still on its way to becoming a household term in the United States, another big brother of this popular puzzle game is currently on the rise. Kakuro, or cross-sums, is now popping its head up as the most amusing number logic puzzle game created. Last year, ABC News reported that the popularity of kakuro has ecclipsed that of sudoku in Japan and the UK.

Even though Kakuro can not be found in every major publication, it has been voted as the ‘new craze’ among sudoku enthusiasts worldwide. Sudoku puzzles are currently printed in nearly every major newspaper and magazine around the world and its safe to say that most individuals you know may have attempted to solve a sudoku puzzle at some point. But when you hear of countries like China, jumping on the Kakuro train, that’s a definite sign that this puzzle game is on its way to becoming a popular and enjoyable past time, just like its younger brother sudoku. Chinese college students are finding this game more challenging than sudoku. Cheng Hao, who is a college student from Shenzhen, discovered kakuro while searching for sudoku puzzles on the internet. He has now become addicted to kakuro and plays it more than sudoku.

Sudoku On Ice

It’s a clear sign and indicator that we are becoming mad and insanely in love with sudoku when we start organizing giant sudoku puzzle competitions on ice. Earlier this week, in the Big Apple, sudoku lovers had a chance to play Snowdoku in order to win a grand prize ski trip to Aspen, Colorado. The competition was organized by The Chrysler Group as a way to promote their newly refined 2007 Chrysler Aspen SUV. The competitors had to partner with individuals to form a team, carry a giant six foot pencil to mark solutions on a large 30 foot X 30 foot sudoku grid made up of 36,000 lbs of snow and ice.
The winners of the Snowdoku competition were a team of five women from the University Of Pennsylvania swim team. They ended up solving the giant sudoku puzzle in 4 minutes and 26 seconds.

Futoshiki Murders Sudoku ?

Sudoku has become the brain narcotic of the 21st century. Many individuals have become hooked and addicted to the challenge it brings. The popular puzzle game has now made its way onto the pages of many national newspapers and various publications. However, these fiendish puzzles better watch out, because there’s a new brainteaser that is slowly gaining approval in the puzzle solving community.

Futoshiki, also called Hutoshiki, is a number logic puzzle game from Japan that is gradually becoming more likeable than the game sudoku. It is similar to sudoku because you have to place a set of numbers in a particular order so that each row and column contains the numbers once. But what makes futoshiki slightly different is not only the removal of the 3X3 box constraint seen in general sudoku, but the addition of greater than or less than signs that affects the number placement in each of the cells.

Futoshiki which means “not equal”, may appear to be straightforward and easy to solve, but just like in most sudoku puzzles, we can not be deceived by appearances.

Sudoku Puzzles Help Mathematicians

As sudoku is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, many universities are adopting these number puzzles as a means to develop math and problem solving skills in college students. As ACT scores continue to decline below the national average, there will be a greater need to introduce resources and material that will help incoming college students develop math solving skills. Mathematicians believe that sudoku puzzles are a good way to help below average students with this ability.

“Sudoku can help develop math skills because players are encouraged to use logic and skill that normal math classes may not exercise,” said Tracy Roberts, who is an assistant registrar for research at Murray State. Often times, it’s not solely the math principles that students misunderstand, but it’s the logic and reasoning involved in using the math principles to solve problems that most students have a hard time doing. Some professionals believe that the solution to helping these students would be to use a tool that will get their brains thinking in a way it has never thought before. The infamous logic game called sudoku is one of the best means to do this. It is not only a number game of logic and critical reasoning, but it is also a very fun and entertaining game to play.
